For possible inspiration - just edit the equations :-)

Layer > New Live Filter Layer > Distort > Spherical

May be a good starting point

I have Photoscape X which has a 3D wrapping transformer: http://x.photoscape.org/ the 3D transformer is basic but useful for quick transforms.

As carl123 has suggested the spherical live filter in tandem with some layer fx will also work well...

This has a spherical filter applied and some layer fx to give it more form.

Hi, - is the Pro version of Photoscape X required to map onto a sphere, and can you map your own images, or just create lines as per in your example?

Thanks.

I have the Pro version but I’m pretty sure it’s in the free version. As for mapping your own images, that image of the lines is mine, I just used it to display the warp, so to answer your question yes you can use your own images.

Personally I prefer to use Affinity Photo, Photoscape will horizontally stretch a square image as in the case of this eye image, the centre part will be oval whereas Affinity Photo will maintain it’s correct shape.

Just tried Photoscape X and have absolutely no idea how to wrap an image to a sphere - even after looking at your screenshots. I will have to try the "Distort > Spherical" way in Affinity Photo.

Thanks.

As the Irishman said when asked the way to Dublin: "Well, if I were you, I wouldn't start from here."

The obvious modification of my equations is to apply similar transformations to both the x and y axes. This will not work. The result is still a square. You would need to apply some form of radial transform. Since the spherical transforms suggested here seem to do the trick, I would not recommend equations.
