Mergin layers?

I have an image as a background layer and I have drawn a rectangle over the top as a semi transparent overlay. How do I merge the layers so I can then crop the combined image. Group, save flattened, all still mean I have to crop the overlay and the background individually.  Oh and, I cannot find "new layer from background" or am I misremembering.

Any advice welcome.

What app you are using and where the resulting image is going?

If you using Photo and resulting file is going to be JPEG/TIF/PSD, just crop the canvas and export.

You can merge with Merge Down (CMD-E) if you need to do that.

Thanks for replying. I am in designer. I opened an image an drew a rectangle over it and filled with white. I then set transparency to give a faded effect. I then wanted to crop it but nothing seems to "bind" the image and rectangle together. Cmnd E (ctrl e cos I am in windows) does nothing..

What do you mean "crop the canvas"?

 

fwiw it started as a jpg and will be exported as a jpg.

You could nest the semi-transparent rectangle overlay within the background image layer, then use the Crop Tool to crop the image layer, then Export with the “Selection without Background” or “Selection With Background” options, see attached image.
Doing it this way leaves your image, overlay and crop intact (‘live’) so they can all be adjusted later.

You have been given a few different techniques, some of which use various merging functions and at least one that doesn’t.
Is there some reason why you need to merge some of the layers?
If you can give us more information about what you are trying to achieve – rather than saying how you want to do it – then we can probably advise better.
