2 questions - conceal, & brush practice

1. When I do a composite or create a new layer, I use a brush & select black to conceal a portion of the image. Sometimes it works but with other images it paints black. What am I doing wrong? 

2. I would like to do more brush work but there are so many different types, is there a way to learn which ones i need besides just trial & error? Thanks!

Normally when that happens it's because the Mask isn't selected.  If you look in the Layer Panel, you should see Mask Layer, if you click on that and then paint, it will work as expected.

They are split into categories to help identify the type of effect they will give.  So other than trial and error, researching the brush category name should help give you an idea of what to expect.  I'm sure if anyone else has tips for this, they will post shortly

Thank you! One other question - I've dnloaded some brushes from Brusheezy but can't change the color like I can with the paintbrush tool. Do you know anything about that? Thanks again.
