Are you trying to use AD as image editor? If you try to edit single separate image AD is not ideal tool for it but it possible with some workarounds.

The easiest way to achieve this in Affinity Designer is by using the Rectangle tool to draw your area, then you can clip and mask your layer(s) using the rectangle, which will hide any nested content that is outside of the rectangles boundaries, essentially cropping the layer.
