It is not good, that the clone stamp is using the original layer. It should use to actual layer.  For example: if you are cloning and you go over just now cloned parts the stamp is not using the cloned part. It is using the original from the background.

It would help to have a screenshot showing your workspace, with the Context Toolbar, and the Layers panel.

But it sounds to me like you may have the wrong Source selected in the Context Toolbar. You have choices of Current Layer, Current Layer and Below, or Layers Beneath, but how they operate will depend to some extent on whether you're cloning on a new layer or cloning on the original layer.

Hi Wolfgang Brenner,
To use the cloned areas in the same layer, release the mouse button (without moving the mouse) a bit before you reach the cloned area, then press the mouse button again and keep cloning/painting. It will use the cloned area you painted previously rather than the original layer data.
