tiguanis Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 I can not get affinity photo to brush in a mask or remove a mask by using the brush tool. type -> b (for brush) or (select brush/paint brush tool) select white or black. Neither one works. Mask color is set to greyscale, or RGB. Mask is all white or all black. I can draw colors, white or black on a non-layered image, but can not paint with white or black on a layer. The only thing that works is to use the erase tool to paint with black or to use the paint mixer brush to paint with white. I tried resetting to factory defaults. That didn't work. I am on a Mac using the version from the App Store. help please. Quote
Dan C Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 Hi @tiguanis, Sorry to hear you're having trouble, could you please provide a screen recording showing the steps you're taking to add a mask to an image, then attempting to paint within the mask? I can confirm that any areas of the mask painted in Black should be masked out, and any areas left in White will remain. If you're unsure how to take a screen recording, please check out our FAQ linked below - Many thanks in advance! Quote
Staff MEB Posted November 6, 2020 Staff Posted November 6, 2020 Hi @tiguanis, Welcome to Affinity Forums Make sure Protect Alpha is not ticked in the context toolbar for the Brush Tool. Also make sure both the Opacity and the Flow (in the context toolbar as well are not set to 0%). Dan C 1 Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

The video shows hardness at 0%, but switching to 100% makes no different. Quote
tiguanis Posted November 6, 2020 Author Posted November 6, 2020 I can also use the pixel brush tool, but it looks too pixelie to use. Looks like a serious bug, or some corruption in the file settings. Any help is appreciated. MacOS 10.14.6 Affinity Photo 1.8.4 Quote
tiguanis Posted November 6, 2020 Author Posted November 6, 2020 Oh!!! Protect Alpha should be OFF, not on. 🙄 It was on. I switched Protect Alpha to off and it works now. thank you. Dan C 1 Quote
