Ms. Deb Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Hey Everyone, I'm new here. Layout Questions!!!! For Ingram, I am using Affinity, well actually, I just bought affinity, I'm working my way through the revolution course, but really so much of this must be self taught depending on your project, and I know the layout is going to make or break my timeline between now and pushing the publish button. Can you please check over my measurements and make sure I'm on the right track???? Here is what I am creating: 8.5 x 8.5 -- 48 pages Saddlestitch, paperback I think this is how I set up right? .125 bleed on outside, top and bottom. no bleed on inside right??? Margins ?????? so should I set to .625 or just to .5 on all outside edges??? And then just make sure all my text and important illustrations are within those margins? FROM INGRAMS GUIDE: Pink (Safety) Area A 0.5" (13 mm) margin is recommended inside the trim for color book interiors. All headers, footers, page numbers, body text and all non-bleed images need to remain in those margins. Any elements outside of the safety areas are at risk of being trimmed. We recommend a 0.125" (3 mm) white strip within the trim area, on the bind side of the page, for perfect bound and hardcover books: this is in addition to the recommended 0.5" margin. Images and background color should stop 0.125" (3 mm) from the trim edge of the page. The white strip is not necessary on Saddle Stitch interiors. Thanks so much for your help Quote
Staff Lee D Posted November 6, 2020 Staff Posted November 6, 2020 From looking at their guides the pink area is basically your overall page size, this isn't including any bleed you setup. Use you margins to define where you want your main content to be within your page as you can use them to align your text frames, images and other objects to. They don't have to be equal on all sides but don't go too close to the edge (bleed/blue area). Below is screenshot of a quick document setup I did showing a single page and facing pages with the below settings, I added some colour shapes to hopefully help show the areas. Page size: W=8.5" x H=8.5" (Pink) Bleed: 0.125" all round (Blue) Margins: Inner: 1", Outer, Top & Bottom: 0.8" Don't forget you can also setup guide lines to also help with alignment or to give you a visual indicator so you don't place anything beyond them. I added two to the single page on the left hand side and across the bottom. Quote
Fixx Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Margins are usually just an aid for visual design – the purpose is that page elements in different pages have exact same distance to page edge. That said, when press cut printed and bound pages are cut to right dimension cutting result is not always exact. That is why we have bleed. As error can happen also to inner direction, it is a good practice not to bring page element too close to the page edge, unless they are meant to be cut and extend to bleed. Inner safe area varies according bind method as Ingram guide says. Quote
