Hi Wolfgang Brenner,
This is by design. Affinity Photo automatically creates a snapshot of the background layer when you open a new image (in case you need to recover it if you changed it destructively). Unless you create new snapshots manually to choose/create new layers from, the original snapshot created by the application remains unchanged and will be used as such.

 But this is very cumbersome when I want to sharpen with the high-pass filter: I need a new layer from the file with changes. Better to have new layer snapshot and choose between background or original
