Eagle Works Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 Hello all. Hope you are all safe wherever you are. I'm drawing up Pacific Northwest Indian art. Sample below (sorry, didn't know how to reduce the size). This red circle/oval is a common part of the drawing (in many different shapes and sizes).. I would like some tips on how to draw it and have both sides as close to exactly the same as I can. I know I can draw half and join them together. That works, but usually after some fiddling. I can start with an oval and start stretching it into shape. Then, it is going back and forth from one side to the other to try and make them look the same. Any tips or techniques to making this an easier task? One tip is to have a bunch of various templates to copy and drag in, but I still need to make the first one! I am changing over to AD from Inkscape and I am a beginner, but starting to get the hang of it. Windows 10 AD 1.8.5.703 Thanks for listening ... Bob Quote Bob Windows 10 Affinity Designer: 1.8.5.703
v_kyr Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 In Designer using symbols for mirror drawing in certain directions is often a big help here. - See for example: Mirror mockup template AD templates Some mandala templates Learn how to make a dreamcatcher using Symmetry Quote ☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan ☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2
Old Bruce Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 Look into using the various Shapes Tools in combination with the Corner Tool. Selecting more that one of the corners at once will allow you to get a curve of the same amount on those corners. You can also use the Node tool to bend a straight line into a curve. If you set up guides before hand and draw to and from those you can then produce curves which are centred. Unasked for personal opinion here so you can ignore it... Symmetry is highly overrated, great for draughting and engineering but you rarely never see it in real life organic shapes. Eagle Works Posted October 31, 2020 Author Posted October 31, 2020 Unasked for, but appreciated, you personal opinion ... If you look at true Northwest Indian art, it is rarely perfect! Thanks for the tip on the corner tool. I know about it, but have never tried it. Will do so now ... Thanks. Bob Quote Bob Windows 10 Affinity Designer: 1.8.5.703

GarryP Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 I’ve attached a short video showing some techniques using the Corner Tool and Node Tool (including Transform Mode). Not the quickest way to do what you want, and not an exact reproduction, but it should show you some techniques you can modify for your own purposes. 2020-11-01_09-42-39.mp4 Quote
