Hello and greetings Affinity folks. I did a search and found a few topics on this matter but it seemed like they all wanted uploads of the file. Which is fine in this case as it's my own photography. I keep getting with all my .afphoto documents on desktop v. 1.8.4 and MacOS V 10.15.7 getting the following error:

Failed to open file, (location), The file type is not supported.

I've attached a .zip file of the document and as I said this is happening across the board and I'm not to sure why. Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Who are ‘they’? If you’re trying to enter a competition or post a photo to an image-sharing site you’ll need to export it to a standard image file format such as JPEG or TIFF.

I apologize "they" refers to other users on the forum when I did a search for the same issue.

Thanks for that, but I’m afraid I’m still not sure what the issue is. Are you having problems reopening a *.afphoto file in Affinity Photo (or one of the other Affinity apps)?

I get the same error as you, it appears to be a large file with the .afphoto file extension. What was the original source? A raw file, jpeg, psd....

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Alfred: trying to open a .afphoto document in Affinity photo. I should have been more clear. I did post the version number I'm using unless all their software is on the same version I can see the confusion

Old Bruce: The original source was a .jpg from my iPhone 12 camera. I then did all the work with layers and corrections etc but it was working fine and then one day the software doesn't want to open any of my .afphoto files which are even smaller in file size but has similar work done on them.

We’re sorry to hear that your Affinity document is no longer opening for you, many thanks for providing a copy of this file. We’ll take a further look at the file to see if we can recover any of its contents. We would obviously also like some additional information to see if we can work out the cause of the problem and stop it happening in future. Can you please confirm for me:

1. What drive type was the file last saved to (select more than one if needed)?
  • Local disk
  • USB disk/Flash disk
  • Google Drive folder
  • OneDrive folder
  • iCloud folder
  • Dropbox folder
  • Network location
  • Other (please specify)

2. What were the most recent changes made to the file, before it reported as corrupt?

3. Any other information you think would help us try to find the problem?

This sounds as though there are other files showing as corrupted - is that the case?

We suggest that you check to see if you have any backups of the document available in case we’re unable to recover the file. The investigation process can take some time, but we’ll be back in contact with our findings.

Hello Dan,

I apologize for the delay in responding.

1. USB Solid State Western Digital

2. File had an adjustment layer put into it but that was about 2 weeks ago. So the file has sat for that amount of time.

3. Yes I do have several other files that are corrupt as well on a different USB drive.

Other: I'm in the process of using Disk Drill on another drive to see if I can find an older version but it will take over 36 hours to complete the entire process.

Thank you for your time and attention in this matter.

I am using Affinity Photo V1 on HP computer with Windows 7 Pro and have had no problems saving and re-opening .afphoto files. This morning when saving a modified file in Affinity, I received a message advising that this file had not been saved (as an Affinity file) although an additional Affinity file did appear in the correct folder. When I tried to open this 'saved' file I got the message that it could not be opened ("File type not supported"). Older .afphoto files still open normally. To save the altered image I have to export it as a jpeg. To save any further changes to this re-opened jpeg file  I have to once again export it as jpeg and overwrite previous saved file. Any suggestions as to the problem?

Hi @Krats,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

It sounds as though the .afphoto file you were editing and attempting to save may have become corrupted, but we're going to need a copy of this document to investigate further.

Can you please attach a copy of the .afphoto file that shows the "File type not supported" error when opening in the Affinity app?

In regards to the exported JPEG file, if you open this for further editing in Affinity Photo and use File > Save As, are you able to save this as an .afphoto file, and can this file then be reopened successfully without the above error being shown?

Many thanks in advance!

Thank you for your response, Dan.

It is not a specific file that is causing this problem but all image files including new jpeg images and previously saved .afphoto and .afphoto(jpg) files. After editing an image and then trying to 'Save As..' an .afphoto file, I get a "Failed To Save" message (screenshot attached). In the requested saved location there is a 0 bytes file with the correct name (I realise now that this is why I am getting a "File type not supported" error when trying to re-open it).

With regard to an exported file (saved as an Affinity Photo File (.jpg)) that has been re-opened in Affinty, this, as in the case above, produces the same error message and is only saved as a 0 bytes file (example attached).

I have uninstalled then re-installed current version (V1 - 1.10.6); uninstalled then re-installed previous version (1.10.5) and updated to 1.10.6; then uninstalled and downloaded & re-installed latest version from website - all without success. No changes have been made to my computer (Windows 7 Pro) recently. Sadly, because of Windows 7, I cannot upgrade to Photo V2.

Many thanks.

Many thanks for the further information provided and my apologies for the delayed response here.

I'd like to try resetting the app back to default settings to see if this resolves both the save & export errors for you, you can reset your app back to its default settings by holding down the CTRL key while launching the app. When the Clear User Data window appears, click Select All and then Clear. The app will now open.

Be aware that resetting your app back to its default settings will lose any custom settings such as keyboard shortcuts and brushes etc. To backup such settings before resetting the app, please watch our Affinity Backing up app resources and factory reset video here -

Please do let me know if this helps :)
