Nazario Posted October 23, 2020 Share Posted October 23, 2020 Not sure if its me doing something wrong but im unable to edit a layer mask using the black and white paint brush?! Ive created a mask and now need to amend small areas of it so was expecting to paint white and/or black on it to adjust accordingly. But all that happens is I get is the mask being erased no matter what colour I use. If there was should it not stop me from editing anywhere outside of that selection? i.e. you wouldn't see the erasing that is happening unless im within the bounds of the selection? A further note even if I right click on the Layer Mask and choose 'Edit Mask' it only 'paints black'. After a restart however it seems to work. A selection would prevent any kind of painting and we are still seeing the strokes even if they act weird. Seems a pontual glitch to me. If you close the app, reopen the image again and try to paint on the mask does it work correctly? I thought it was me not doing something correctly and went back to Photoshop. Its working as of right now as I say after a restart, if it happens again I will let you know. Sumpin' definitely wonky it's broken again after working after a restart. All I did was change the opacity in the slider Carl pointed out and now the paint brush no matter the colour is erasing the mask again. Weird bug. hmm... maybe this is why I really struggle to get my head around using colours in Affinity. Also Trying to reorder swatches causes a crash to desktop which I submitted quite a while ago. The issue above is a bit hard to replicate from the information on this thread alone. Seems there was some steps taken before the video was recorded that leaved the app in a weird state. rinso Posted November 29, 2020 Share Posted November 29, 2020 I have the same problem. I cannot paint on a mask with the paintbrush. If I invert the mask (ctrl+i) I can paint in white with the color replacement tool. As I try to show the mask as: (overlay, white/black/transparent) nothing happens. It does not paint white on top of black in the mask layer. The color and opacity settings seem totally fine. Restart does not help. If you mean an official stack (File > New Stack) then I think that masking is handled somewhat differently, with some special rules for how masking works. I don't think that would cause what you just described, but I think it might be better for you to start your own topic, and to provide screenshots showing the Layers panel, and possibly a sample .afphoto document. If you want to invert the layer you can use Cmd + I (Mac), Ctrl + I (Windows) or use Layer > Invert... You can paint in any color mode on masks, no need to use greyscale. all colored will be automatically converted when applied on a mask layer, only the lightness will be used.
