Brushes stopped working Build V1.9.0.199 (Found: Cause invisible selection pixels)

Recommended Posts

The attached is a restoration I was colouring, trying to use a paint brush on the topmost pixel layer, blend mode colour now does nothing even after closing all apps and doing a forced restart. First Gen iPad Pro 9.7”. IPadOS 14.2 beta.

Same problem on the iPad Pro 2020. Even if I remove all layers and keep only the original image there is no way to paint over it.

@Paul Mudditt Interestingly you can delete all the layers and the problem persists. Almost like protect alpha has locked on.

Does it work on desktop?

MAC Supposedly build V1.9.0.196 cannot open it says its from a newer version !!

PC V1.9.0.780 opens it and likewise none of the brushes now work.

More weird behaviour, managed to get inpainting brush doing stuff but just not what it was supposed to be doing lol !

Interestingly, exact same behaviour when opened on PC version, using inpainting brush looks like it is cloning from the layers below now.

Just for info obviously I was mid way through a repair when it stopped working, can’t recall what steps triggered this behaviour.

@Paul Mudditt hi Paul, you must have had a pixel selected somewhere. I just did a change to Selection Persona and tapped Deselect from menu. Then paint brush worked again. I’ve been caught out before. 😀

Ha lol !

EDIT: Dave you are correct as usual but this is going to bite a lot of people. I inverted the pixel selection then found it, however it is completely invisible when I invert once more. This behaviour is identical on PC too.

@Affinity Photo team:-

Developers need to see something interesting here, invert the pixel selection and zoom in on PC or iPad to these 2 problem pixel selections.
Now invert selection and they disappear.
Using smart selection brush with a very small brush add to the selection a few more pixels which appear.
Now invert selection and the original problem pixels re-appear, invert once more and they vanish but the new ones don't. Seems to be a sweet spot in the maths maybe somewhere.

I can find the invisible selection in the attached file but I can't get this from scratch. It's worth passing the file over though I think.

I agree this catches a lot of people out (not just the invisible selection—but small ones). I wonder if we could make a toast that notices you painting outside of a selection, which could at least give you a clue what's going on!

On an iPad I zoom in more often that on a large screen destop. So small selections, outside of the zoomed area, got me a few times. Yes, some way of knowing that we are trying to do some work outside a selection would be useful.
