Hello,

I make custom LEGO® instructions and have used InDesign as that is what was provided through school.

I want to transition to publisher but it seems that a few things are not quite what I expect. I have tried to find answers here in the forum but nothing is quite what I am looking for.

I have a need to do the following:

  • Drag and drop multiple images and drop them into frames on each page. The LEGO® instruction program puts out a PNG that I place on the page and add page numbers, text boxes, and other things on top of as part of the layout. In many cases there are over 100 pages to do. In InDesign, I would just grab a batch of images and click on each frame to place the image on the page.
  • Add a page. Right now if I place all the images into frames, then add a page in the document, all of the placed images after the added page are no longer in those frames.
  • Re-Path or use relative pathing for all the images. I have multiple computers that I work from and they do not all have the same file paths to the dropbox folders where my work is stored  so if I open a document on a different computer, the images are all "missing"

I know this seems like a lot but to also give some context, I have added a description of my setup and work flow below.

  • Create instructions and export all pages as png
  • Create Publisher document with appropriate page size
  • Create master spreads with background color, page number, image frame and some copyright text
  • Create front and back covers
  • Add the number of pages needed (this is where I noticed that the back cover I created loses its images)
  • Place all page PNG images
  • Export as PDF

Thanks for reading this and any taking the time to reply.

When using File > Place you can select multiple images, which will then show in a temp Placed Images panel from which you can click drag your images into the frames. The downside to this panel is that it can't be docked to remain and once all the images have been used as it will disappear. Hopefully this may be improved in a future update.

Can you expand more on how after adding a page, placed images on another page are no longer there, perhaps a screen recording.

Once an image has been placed, you can use the Resource Manager to confirm linked/embedded status. For the moment it may be worth embeddeding the images into the document, to ensure the images are present if the document is opened on another system, however this will add to the overall document size.
