Ok, I’m sure this is a stupid question, but for the life of me I can find how to do it.  On the desktop Verizon you just hit the button at the bottom of the layer palette (that looks like a Japanese flag) and it makes what you have selected mask the layer you are on.    
 

‘any ideas?
