Not able to Merge Layers

Hi, I am an old time Photoshopper but am new to Affinity Photo and am having an issue with merging layers. The merge visible button is active but the merge selected button is disabled. I am sure  I am making a silly mistake but have not been able to figure out what I am doing wrong, snapshoot of the issue is attached. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

I think Merge Selected is available only if at least one selected object is a Pixel object, but yours are all Group objects.
Even when it is available, it does nothing if the lowest object in the selection is not a Pixel object.

If you press ctrl+g to group your selected objects, then you can do Rasterise to convert all of them into one Pixel object.
