Stylistic Sets Not Working Properly

Hi - I too am having a problem.  I only have 3 stylistic sets,  I watched the affinity typography video "Alice"   typed in Alice and still only have 3 sets not the whole list it showed and can hardly do anything.

I have tried different letters,  what am I doing wrong?  or not doing?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, Jane. :)

Which font are you using? What characters have you typed? What characters have you selected?

Hi Alfred

Thanks for responding.

I have typed the word "Alice"  as after watching the affinity tutorial video thought I would play with the typography as was shown.

Unfortunately with no joy whatsoever.

I have gone through all my fonts and still only get 3 stylistic styles.

I have downloaded opentype fonts and gone through all of them and again only the same 3 stylistic sets

No idea what I am doing wrong - any ideas?

Thanks, Jane

Which tutorial video? A pointer to it would help.

How far into the video was it shown?

Gabriola is not a good choice to demonstrate stylistic sets. Too much going on.
And I am not sure exactly what APub is displaying (some appears to be wrong and/or misleading).
For example: ss04, ss05, ss06, and-ss07 all have a lot of contextual substitutions.
APub is displaying the stylistic sets as available on characters which are not in the correct context.
So applying the displayed stylistic set does nothing.
That is confusing to users.

There are much better font choices to use to demonstrate stylistic sets.with simple replacements which:

  1. Will not be displayed wrong by APub
  2. Will not confuse users.

In particular, there are seemingly a lot of funny interactions if you choose multiple stylistic sets, so you never quite know what you’re going to get until you try it! And although Gabriola is supplied as standard with recent versions of Windows, most Mac users won’t have it.

I have been looking at it some more by selecting various characters and in almost every case the options presented are wrong.

@Gabe

That tutorial should be replaced.
Not good to demonstrate a feature in a way that is not working properly.
Every new user who views that video is going  be frustrated and confused.

Hi Alfred

Sorry for the delay.

I have taken some screenshots to see if that helps you to help me solve the problem

Notice in my text drop down of typography nothing is in it.  I could not get a screenshot of the only 3 stylistic sets I have as it collapsed as I tried to take a screenshot.

Many thanks, Jane

Arial doesn’t have the features you’re looking for. Try some of these:

https://www.fontspace.com/category/stylistic

You may find that they only offer ‘Stylistic Alternates’, not ‘Stylistic Sets’, but at least that should give you something to play with!

@janeH

Arial does have some stylistic sets to test with. I looked at them yesterday when testing this. Since they are simple replacements they work correctly. One stylistic set replicates the unicase OpenType feature. Some of the others do standard stuff like alternate forms of a, g, y, etc.
