UweN Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Hello, I get some crashes today and APhoto and APublisher stopped suddenly without any message. I have the crash dumps. Please send a link to upload the dumps. This is a warning in the Windows Event Viewer: Windows has diagnosed that the virtual memory is insufficient. The following programs occupy the most virtual memory: Publisher.exe (8388) occupies 16737030144 bytes, Photo.exe (25668) occupies 3002703872 bytes, and firefox.exe (19360) occupies 607084544 bytes. walt.farrell Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 If it's related to a virtual memory shortage it would certainly be nice if the applications terminated cleanly, rather than crashing. But that can be difficult when memory is exhausted. Looking at your numbers: Publisher is using over 15 GB of memory; and Photo is using over 2.5 GB of memory; and Firefox is using about .5 GB And probaby other applications and the system are using some, too. It might be interesting to see how much virtual memory do you have configured. You can tell by following the instructions here, even though it says they're for 32-bit users. The dialog you get to will also allow you to change the configuration if you want to. It will also show minimum and recommended values. (On my laptop, which has 8GB of memory, my virtual memory configuration is ~ 24GB, or 3x the amount of actual memory.) walt.farrell Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I think your virtual memory is configured too small. You have 16GB of physical memory, which is 16384MB, but your virtual storage size is ony 13743MB. The recommendation (for 32-bit systems) is a minimm of 1.5 times the physical memory, up to 3 times the physical memory. I don't know if 64-bit systems have the same recommendation, but having less virtual memory than physical memory is probably not a good situation. Perhaps the drive where you have your pagefile.sys file located is out of space, and it can't grow? It seems to be on the C drive which has only 40092MB available space. UweN Posted September 21, 2020 Author Posted September 21, 2020 You are right, the space on the system drive was too small. I moved the pagefile.sys to another drive. I'll see if it works now. But a program should not stop working without any information about the reason of the problem. Quote
walt.farrell Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 I hope it works. In general I agree that the application should detect issues and terminate cleanly with notification to the user. But if the system is in trouble it's possible the system terminated them in a way that they couldn't say anything. Though, if they were able to generate the crash reports it seems they should have been able to say something to you while doing it. Still, it's possible that they tried to say something and crashed while doing that. If Serif asks for the crash reports they may be able to tell.
