Opening photos/files from iPad Files

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Fairly new to working on this sort of stuff on iPad, and trying to nail down my workflow. Using Affinity Photo on iPad, I’m apparently able to get images from the Photos app, and from iCloud, but not able to open anything from the Files app. Frankly, I’m shocked. iPadOS has been a thing long enough, I would expect to be able to brown and open from Files.

Am I missing something?

Will you elaborate further on what you’re trying to achieve? When you say “browse and open from Files”, what files are you trying to open? Are you trying to place images from the Files app onto an Affinity Photo document? If so, simply open the Files app on slide over then drag and drop the file into the Affinity Photo document.

Hi @mjcampagna and Welcome to the Forums,

Are you trying to open a file stored locally on your iPad?  If so, when you tap on the import/open from Cloud option, on the left you should have an option for Locations.  Tap on Locations and you should then see the option for On My iPad and all the other options that are available in the Files app down the side.

The method posted by @HereForTheTea will also work :)

Long press on file in Files app and select Share Sheet. On Share sheet select Affinity app.

Trying to open (raw) file from Apple Photo into affinity photo but affinity photo doesn’t appear in the share option (I’ve checked edit to add new apps in share option). Why doesn’t affinity photo appear there?

Does anyone have a decent DAM on iPad, one that would actually work viewing photos in folders(and sub folders) on a external SSD? For now I’ve had to upload a copy of all my entire RAW files into Photos, but it’s rubbish compare to what you need (like searching by exif, tags etc)

Not a lot of choice. I’ve been using Pixave which has some useful features but is not supported as such. Still working with ios14.

Thanks. Pixave almost looks good. But when I tried it there was zero support for external SSD, and doesn’t even respect folders within Apple Photos, so I cannot pull in one folder which contains many albums.  Looks like it’s not been updated for a while.

I just find that without a decent DAM on iPad, it’s utterly useless for photo editing for me. It’s one of the things I hate about apple. They are always decades behind in flexibility for users who step out of the Apple circle and use a dedicate camera, or decent storage device.

Thanks anyway.

I use Documents by Readdle to access various drives. The ‘Swiss army knife' of apps! It allows the creation and use of hierarchical folders and can directly access the Apple photo library. Unfortunately it doesn’t display raw images but it’s easy enough to drag and drop between Pixave and Documents. In iOS 14 Documents is able to see/access user created Folders in the Library. A DAM is certainly needed and I believe Serif have this on their development path.

Shame if they don’t release one as it seems to be an area that doesn’t have many apps available, and certainly not ones aimed at people who do more than shoot with their phone.

That said I have just installed Mylio, and this seems to be great for syncing across all my machines so I can view and edit from anyway. Only problem now is that on my iPad, I cannot see Affinity Photo in my Share option from any app.
