Designer gradient control doesn't work on first use.

It looks to me that you haven't "ticked" the left end of the gradient.

In the film you can see the difference of the size of the left circle in the first and the second attempt.

 

Hope this is understandable!

Thanks, but I didn't do anything different the second time, and it works.

 

There's nothing in the panel that indicates to the user that he needs to click on those things.

Stokestack, I agree. I struggle with the gradient tool all the time. 
BTW, you can click in those cirkles on the actual gadient and insert the colors there as well.

Thanks!  The use of tabs for different kinds of fill doesn't seem optimal.  I have a suggestion:

Also, you should be able to right-click in the gradient-display area to add or delete control points.  Currently there doesn't seem to be any way to control where the new one goes when you press Insert.

 

The "Fill type" drop-down list can offer "None," "Solid color", and each of the gradient types.  Then you simply display the appropriate set of controls for each type.  Alternatively, you could have "Gradient" as a type and then have a control to select the kind of gradient (linear, elliptical, etc.).
