How to measure path length

So I could do this in InkScape quite easily - and from the links provided above it seems illustrator can do the same.  I can't believe designer can't :o 

Like others in the other forum posts, I am designing patterns and need to know the length of certain seams.  So looks like I'll go back to the open source InkScape then :(
