FREE-RANGE LA
Just new to Publisher, sick of cost of InDesign, and trying it out. Loving its ease of use, but it has crashed on my 3 times this morning, my first day of using it.. Twice today when I have tried to Place documents, either as Place or Drag and Drop from Finder, I get the churning wheel, and have to crash it eventually. This has been on flies that were both large - 70mb - and small - 9mb. On one of those times, it also made my Apple Keyboard stop.. weird. Not sure how many more hours I will spend on this new product before I revert to InDesign.. Pity, I love Designer on the iPad.
Staff Gabe Posted September 9, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 9, 2020 Hi @JuJuRaxy, Can you attach the documents you were placing, and the afpub file you were placing them onto so we can have a look? Can you place those files in a blank new document? Can you place other files(image for example) in your "problem document" ?
FREE-RANGE LA
(BTW, I tried to load onto this page and it just said queued and never loaded... trying again) So, some files DO go in, some don't. Some take longer to import but get there eventually. Some bigger files come in and some smaller don't. Sometimes it freezes my keyboard across all apps until I crash it. I have also tried in a new document and its no difference. AF Place Crash.afpub tod-guide[1].pdf
Joachim_L
On Windows APu is freezing too, when you place the original PDF (434 pages). If I trim it down to 50-page-packages and place it, I get the "No response" message only for a short period, before being able to place it. Maybe you should the trim the PDF into smaller packages? Thanks for the reply. My doc was only small. And I also think that if you have to start messing with files to make them fit, is that something you should have to do to make a piece of software work? Joachim_L
I just wanted to offer you a workaround. I guess it just the way APu handles a placed PDF. ID places it in a second, APu is trying to place and interpret it for further edits. Everyone here is eagerly awaiting a pass-through option for PDF files - hopefully speeding things up. Joachim_L
Another workaround I tested right now. You can try out "Add pages from file" in the Pages panel. After a short while you get options for adding pages of that PDF. OK, that is good to know, thanks: I guess I am still trying to work out if I will stick around with this app. In the short/edium? term I will have to stick w InDesign though, it looks like. One thing I DO really like is the ability to have a pull down to choose which page of the PDF to show... but if you can't get the PDF into the program in the first place, thats not much help. Staff Gabe Posted September 9, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 9, 2020 I would not say it's crashing, but just taking it's time. As @Joachim_L, we handle and "interpret" a pdf when we place it. So, technically, it's working to convert 450 pages into a "editable" format. For the moment, there's not much we can do. FWIW mine took 10 minutes to open. During this time, the app was non-responding, but it eventually came back to life.

It also would not let place a 50 page PDF. I would be happy just to choose which, like you an in InDesign

Maybe an option of having the option when you place it of making it editable or not is the way to go? Like what you guys are trying to do with the app, but in my work I am placing PDF's all the time and can't really afford to wait or have program instability. Old Bruce
My experience is that it opened in a minute. Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear. I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
