Formerly Sans Serif
EDIT: Whoops. Mods, this belongs in the “Designer Bugs found on iPads” subforum. My apologies for posting in the wrong place! Hello! I’m running version 1.8.4.4 of Affinity Designer for iPad on iPadOS 13.6.1, and I’ve run into a pretty annoying new bug. I’ve been using the color sampler gesture within the brush tool in the Pixel persona ever since I first downloaded Designer for iPad about a year and a half ago, but recently it is not working as expected. I first noticed that the color I was getting wasn’t the color I intended to sample, but about halfway in between the color I intended to sample and the color I was previously using. This happens regardless of specific brush or settings. Then, I eventually noticed that whenever I held and dragged my finger to sample a color, I would leave a single tap’s worth of brush stroke behind in the spot where I lifted my finger. I suspect this unwanted brush stroke is interfering with the color sampling operation. I double checked to make sure the “Touch for Gestures Only” setting is enabled. It is, and otherwise working as expected. The dedicated eye dropper tool is also working normally. I’ve attached screenshots to demonstrate my problem. Help is very much appreciated! This is a huge part of my workflow and I’d love to have it working again. Staff Gabe Posted September 9, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 9, 2020 Hi @Formerly Sans Serif The only thing I can think of is the layer you're paining on has a different blend mode / opacity. Can you attach the file in question?
Formerly Sans Serif
Thanks for the reply, @Gabe! I’m attaching a new file so you can try to replicate the bug. It occurs in all of my documents, and does not seem to be a product of blend modes, on layers or otherwise. As I suspected before, I believe the problem is not that the color sampler is innacurate, but that an errant brush stroke appears when using the gesture. I’m pretty sure this errant brush stroke is interfering with an actually perfectly operating color picker. Thanks again! Staff Gabe Posted September 10, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 10, 2020 I replicated the stroke appearing when you colour pick. That seems to be just a redraw issue, and it will disappear when you paint or change tools, so should not affect your drawings. Issue logged. The colour not being correct - When you colorpick, it only picks on one pixel and not an average. Those brush strokes have lots of opaque areas and I think it's just picking those up. Try and see if you can replicate it with a solid brush.
Collin S.
Hello, I wanted to chime in here since I am experiencing this same issue and it is driving me nuts. I've been doing a lot of painting using the pixel tools in Designer and noticed this one recently. As Gabe mentioned, the stroke that is left behind after using the color picker gesture does disappear after I do anything else. However the color sampled is from the ghost stroke, not the color I am actually trying to pick. So, depending on the brush I have selected, the color that is picked ends up being a blend between the previous color I selected and the color I am trying to pick. I took a couple screen shots showing the issue, but the attachments function is broken for me for some reason so I can't attach my pictures directly to the post. I uploaded them to imgbb, so hopefully that will work well enough: Image 1 Image 2 I have managed to replicate the issue while the "Touch for gestures only" setting was both on and off. It seems that whenever I press and hold to start a single finger gesture (the little blue circle appears under my finger) with the Paint Brush Tool, and then move my finger across the canvas, Designer starts to make a stroke instead when it is not supposed to (I have managed to make it leave a stroke without triggering the color picker to appear, in which case it lets me draw as if Touch for gestures only is off). Any strokes left in this manner will disappear as soon as I make a normal stroke. Also I am using version 1.8.6.1 of Affinity Designer on my iPad Pro 2020 model with the Apple Pencil 2. Let me know if you have any questions for me. I would really like this bug fixed since it really slows me down having to use any of the other methods of color picking while I work. Thanks, Collin

Thanks, Collin I have nothing more to add other than ditto to everything! I’m still having the issue, and I’ve been working around it by switching tools back and forth every time I choose a color. It’s pretty annoying so I hope this gesture can finally be restored to its original usability.
