Seamless Document Rotation?

Recommended Posts

@bentraje, Try this workaround:

Filter > Distort > Equations
    Set Co-ordinates to Polar and Angular Units to Radians
In the t box, enter
    t=t+2*pi*a
Now move the a slider and the image will rotate to whatever rotation you like..
Press Apply to finish.

If you just wanted to rotate by an arbitrary number of degrees (say 256), then   you would set the Angular Units to Degrees and in the t box enter t+256.

You may want to enlarge the canvas before doing this to allow for the rotation.

I attach here a macro to perform the rotation. However, I would not recommend using the macro since:

  • It does not incorporate enlarging the canvas. For various reasons,this is better done separately.
  • When you mover the a slider, there is a significant delay before the image rotates.

I believe that @bentraje wants to rotate the canvas, John, not the document. In other words, change the view of the document, not the document itself.

Silly me. I assumed that when the OP said "seamless document rotation", that they meant "seamless document rotation".

I did watch the attached video, but this was rotating a blank canvas/document so that was not really a clue.

Still admitting my ignorance, why should you want to rotate the canvas rather than the document?

For example for painting?

Hi bentraje,
Are you running macOS or Windows? On macOS you can use the trackpad (on a MacBook or on an Apple Magic Trackpad) to rotate the view. Make sure Enable canvas rotation with trackpad is enabled in the Tools section in Preferences. Some tablet models (with touch support) or by other means also allows you to rotate it.

John the Philistine (not really)

When you are writing something on paper do you have it standing straight in front of you? Same for drawing but it requires way more flexibility/freedom to stroke/sketch following different directions.

If you draw something with a pencil/pen on paper, don't you rotate it as needed? - to make it easier and more accurate for you (and more naturally).

I would acknowledge what @MEB and @Pšenda say. But I agree with what @haakoo says. I'm not an artist, but if I were drawing on screen, I would rotate the document if it made my drawing more convenient.

In the case of vector drawing, of course, this is not a problem, but in the case of a bitmap, where each rotation degrades and destroys the image, it is really a "smart" solution 🙂

I rotate the paper(document) and not my desk(view) as this would be the right analogy.

I don't think that's the right analogy, because when you rotate the paper on the table, the contents of the paper also rotate - as opposed to rotating the document in Affinity, which rotates the contents of the paper relative to the sheet.
Edit: Personally, therefore, I think that the rotation of the paper on the table is, from the point of view of the contents of the paper, an adequate rotation of the entire table.

Hi,

Is there a way to have seamless document rotation?
Currently, it snaps by 90 or 15 degree increments. It's a bit rigid for me.

Here's what I meant by seamless rotation where you just drag the mouse while holding R.

Yes, please pay attention to this. I also need to be able to do that in order to professionally use affinity designer for illustration. When you draw in pixels it is essential to be able to rotate the canvas quickly and easily to adjust the freehand strokes in the most comfortable way for the arm and wrist. It is an essential ergonomic issue. All pixel drawing programs do it and it is something very necessary.
