Issue trying to launch 1.8.4.5 beta on Big Sur

Recommended Posts

I have Affinity Designer 1.8.4 installed via the Mac App Store on one volume, and I'm running the Big Sur beta with the 1.8.4.5 beta installed on a separate volume. When I launch the beta, I get a dialog saying that I need to have the app from the Mac App Store or have a valid product key.

I didn't see a button anywhere to browse for the MAS app manually, so I tried moving the MAS version of 1.8.4 onto the same volume as the beta, but I still got the dialog. Is there anything else else I could try?

Version: macOS 11.0 Beta (20A5354i)

Also, I think this is a typo… it says "To participate in the beta you need to install Affinity Designer *Beta* from the Mac App Store…". I think it should just be "Affinity Designer"? :)

Thanks!

I don't think the Mac 1.8.4 beta will work once you have the retail 1.8.4 installed. Generally, if I remember correctly, on Mac the beta must be newer than the retail version or it will not launch.

Hi Platskies,

The beta version is older than the 1.8.4 MAS version. As Walt has said once the retail version has updated to the current version, the beta version will stop working.

As for the message - that does indeed look incorrect - I'll get that passed on!

Oh, I thought the 1.8.4.5 beta was the latest, as it's higher than 1.8.4 :) But also, the thread below indicates that it hasn't yet been submitted to the Mac App Store:

Looking at the MAS, 1.8.4 is the latest. Does this mean it has the changes in the 1.8.4.* beta versions? Looks like it does, the toolbar buttons work (unlike an earlier version I was using).
