Default document gamma for layer Blend Options

Recommended Posts

There is a preference to set the default blend gamma for Text objects, but there is no document-wide setting — neither when creating a new document or via the Preferences. This would be really useful, as changing each layers default gamma from 2.2 to 1.0 (as I would like to) gets tedious and slows down workflow. Thanks for your consideration.

Hi evtonic3,

If you select an object then go to the Layers panel and click on the little cog icon to the top right of that panel, you should get an advanced blending dialog - you can choose to use a different blend gamma for the selected object(s) in order to make different compositional effects. You also have control of blend ranges and coverage ramp (the ramp used by antialiasing) so you can fine-tune things

It's worth a quick google to find out about the uses of blend gamma or linear blending (http://petapixel.com/2015/03/20/an-explanation-of-how-computers-handle-color/ for example)

Thanks,

Matt

offtopic but:

does this mean that a DARK UI helps the user to see the contrasts of the UI easier?

...cause there are so many out there who go crazy about dark UIs and that these UIs would be hard to read but in fact light UIs (with the same contrast) would be even harder to read, right?

So Matt, is adding a default Gamma setting (Preferences or New Document window seem likely places for the setting to live) something you are considering adding?

  • 5 years later...

I always want gamma-correct blending, so an option to set the default gamma to 1.0 in the global preferences, just like I can for text, would be highly appreciated. Sometimes I forget setting it for each layer, only to later find out I have to adjust colors again, etc. So, any update on this?
