Help needed with colored sketch

Recommended Posts

Hi, hope somebody can help me please.  I am newbie to designer and photo and I have this sketch that I would like to clean up. I have used some blend modes but some parts still not enhanced(outlines) enough if that is the right word.

1. I would like to clean up the background, there are a few colored lines that i want to remove.

2. The clouds and tree outlines  need to be made darker or recolored, Can I recolor it? and not sure how to delete and recolor the inside so that it looks natural? , or should I vector it first and then recolor?

3. Can you select only a part of the drawing to make changes? as with the blend modes for instance, it does the whole sketch, how can I only choose a specific part.

I know it is a lot of questions, if anybody have a moment, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks

M.

Welcome to the forums @marisavdl
Assuming that your sketch is a raster image and not vectors, in Photo (best for raster manipulation):
1. You can use the Erase Brush Tool to clean up the background. There will be other methods but the best one to use would depend on exactly what you want to remove.
2. You can use the Selection Brush Tool to select the area of a cloud or the tree then use the Burn Brush Tool to make the colours darker. Again there will be lots of other ways, the best depending on your precise requirements.
3. There are various Selection Tools available which let you select things in different ways and you can apply Adjustments and Live Filters to parts of an image but the tool you need and the adjustment/filter that is best will depend on specifically what you want to select and what you want to do with the selection.
Basically, there are lots of ways to do what you have asked for but the best ways in these cases will depend what you want to do.
If you can be more specific with your requirements then people will be able to give you more specific help.

Hi Garry,

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it, I know this might not be as exciting as some of the projects on the forum :)

The background i would like to clean up, there is some coloring marks in green, I will use the eraser tool as suggested, I was trying to do it with the flood selection, but for some reason, it selects, but doesnt delete, is just says not AP not responding. I not sure if I did something wrong. But it keeps on doing it, so I gave up on that.

I want to print on a tshirt, so want to make the outlines more clear, clean up the clouds and tree, the green and inside coloring not clear. How can I select only the green of the tree for instance and make more clear/prominent.

Then if I do recolour what will be the best way to go about it, to get the same kind of effect, or should I rather vector the whole picture?

Thank you again,

Your image is large – 15,983×12,183 pixels, 194.72MP – so the Flood Select Tool may take a long time to make a selection depending on the settings for that tool. This could cause the application to stop responding for a while but it should always come back with a selection and not hang indefinitely.

You might have to give us more details about what you mean by “make the outlines more clear” and “clean up the clouds and tree”.
Different people will have different ideas about what these things mean.
For instance, by making the outlines “more clear”, do you want to:
1. make the edges less ‘fuzzy’?
2. make the colours brighter?
3. make the colours darker?
4. make the strokes wider?
5. something else, or a combination of things?
Similarly, to “clean up” the clouds and tree, do you want to:
1. do any of the same things as above?
2. fill their shapes in with more colour?
3. make them look more ‘natural’?
4. remove noise?
5. something else, or a combination of things?
When asking for advice, especially in areas where visuals are so important and the number of possibilities could be huge, it’s best to give as much specific information as you can. Sometimes it’s good if you can supply an image which you want to emulate; that way people can see what you want rather than coming up with what they think you might want.

As for printing on a T-shirt I have no experience in that area so someone else will have to help you with that. However, I would suggest asking the place that will be doing the printing for advice as they should know what they are doing. For instance, your image could probably be brought down to a smaller size with a smaller DPI – currently 400 – as the print shop will have certain limits and standards for printing on T-shirts.

Thank you Garry,

Yes you are right it is too big, and I have scaled it down.

What I meant by the clear, is make the outline of the tree darker, (green part) and more visible and I would like to recolour it. Same with the clouds.

How do I change the colour of the clouds? If I want make them grey/blue?

The black outline, stroke lines of the giraffe is not consistent the same thickness and hardness. So it doesn't look smooth. Can I change the thickness of the stroke or will I have to redraw the picture.

I apologise for not being more to the point before.

Thank you.

You can use the Burn Brush Tool to darken the outlines of the tree but that won’t introduce colour where it doesn’t exist.
To create colour where it doesn’t exist you could try using the Clone Brush Tool.
See first attached video where I use both.

To recolour the clouds, one method could be to use the Selection Brush Tool with a Recolour Adjustment, see second attached video, but there will be many other methods.

As for the outline of the giraffe, I would be tempted to try creating a new vector curve – in Designer this time – which follows the outline that is already there and then use a vector brush to create the new outline. See third attached video. Once you have the new outline you can erase the old one with the Erase Brush Tool if you want to. You may need to experiment with different brushes and/or use other tools to make the new outline less ‘defined’.
