Publisher 1.8.4, Spell Checking a story does not work at all

The spell checker for a text body does not work at all. I select the text then top menu > text > spelling > spelling options. I then get the pop up window that does nothing at all.

Can you give us a screenshot of the dialog you get?

Which of the buttons have you used? (And also, do you have any misspelled words?)

None of the buttons do anything. I don't know if I had any misspelled words. You would think that if Publisher didn't find any misspelled words it would notify me like InDesign does . . .

On the right in the Character Studio, what is Language set to for the selection?

English, every thing else there is set to auto . . .

If there's nothing in that dialog, then it's possible you have nothing misspelled. Or, alternatively, as Patrick has suggested, perhaps you don't have a valid spelling language declared for that text.

You could also open the Preflight studio panel and run a check. If there are any misspelled words you should fail the Preflight Check, with the default profile.

If the spellchecker doesn't tell you "there are no misspelled words" or "done", what's the point? If every new user of this function is going to post here with this issue, it sure is a lot of wasted effort . . . just a rhetorical statement . . .

I agree a message would be nice. But playing devil's advocate, it's clear that "every new user" of the function is not posting about this. I'm not sure why, but there could be a variety of reasons for that:

• Perhaps most users are using Text > Spelling > Check Spelling While Typing, rather than Show Spelling Options.
• Or, since the Preflight Checker was introduced, perhaps they're depending on the Preflight checks. (Based on posts in these forums, I've seen several users doing that.)
• Or, perhaps most of us end up with at least one misspelled word, so we never see the "empty box" situation you experienced, which seems to be a confusing one. The other confusing one, I think, is when you finish the spell checking using Show Spelling Options. In that case, the final word that was checked remains in the box, and you need to figure out that you should Close the dialog. Everyone using Show Spelling Options is likely to have hit that situation. Again, a message would be nice.
