Welcome Photo User Interface gone missing

Recommended Posts

Just purchased and downloaded PHOTO.  On Macbook Air 2020,  OS 10.15.5 (Safari).   I am a first time ever user of the app.   When it first opened the welcome Photo screen was there with the normal toolbars etc.      I had to go do something else so I closed the application.   When I came back and reopened the application there is no Welcome Photo user interface screen - and none of the toolbars.     I looked at the UI video and I do not have the same screen at all.   I put a photo of File>New screen below.     Thanks for your help ...

@Kes Go to Help > Welcome… Click on it and the welcome screen will appear, in the bottom left of that screen is a check box for “Show this panel on startup"

... which is selected by default (Welcome screen is displayed after starting the application), and you had to uncheck it.

Hi @Kes,

Welcome to the forums :)

The Welcome Screen will only show when the app is first launched (provided you have the aforementioned option checked) and once closed will not re-open itself unless the app is restarted or you manually open the Welcome Screen.

In regards to your UI, it looks as though this is hidden currently as you don't have a document open - please select a document size from the File>New dialog and then create the document, you should see the UI appear for the app now.

I hope this helps!

Thank you to all who responded.    I restarted my computer and that brought the Welcome Screen up.  I did check to see that the Tick-Box 'show this panel on startup' was checked.   I also tried to manually open the Welcome Screen through going to Help > Welcome > manual , but these commands : welcome > manual do not exist in my version of the software.   I then went to my UI and File>New and clicked on a size and this brought up a blank doc.    I could not get beyond that, and I cannot seem to find a Beginners tutorial that is beginner enough.   I need next to know how I import a psd photo from my computer into the program.   And I also need to know how to import a jpeg into the program.  Can someone point me to a tutorial?   or do I have to buy the 49.99 book (ugh)?     Thanks again.

Correct, there is no "manual" menu entry, – just choose "Welcome...", manually ;)

There are 2 different options for opening/importing images and documents into Affinity. Firstly if you select File>Open and navigate to your document (be it a .PSD, .JPEG, .PDF etc) and open it here, then this will open as a new document in the app.

The other option is if you want to add an image/document to an existing document in Affinity, to do this please use File>Place and select your document. This time, rather than creating a whole new Affinity file, the app will allow you to 'place' the imported document as a separate layer in your preexisting document.

You can find all of our tutorials at the link below :)

  • 2 months later...

I'm having  a similar problem to what Kes originally  described.  I've got the 10 day free trial  version of Affinity Photo.  I registered  last week and managed to get into the User Interface screen.   I can't remember exactly how I got there, but it must have been simple or I would have remembered the hassle.   I started exploring the different tools and made ok if slow progress.  Having closed the app for a couple of days I Iogged in again, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get back to the UI screen.  There is no Welcome page coming up, and I tried searching for Help - Welcome, as suggested in the Forum, but can't find the Help screen.  I've been into Learn, Tutorials and anything else that looked vaguely promising; I've closed the app and logged in again , all to no avail.  Can anyone help?  I'm currently being restrained from going anywhere near sharp objects......  Thanks in advance, Jon

I am not sure about your understanding of "screen" in this situation. Possibly the command to hide the UI got selected?

There are two options:

1. Menu View > Studio > Hide Studio (hides panels only, maintains bars)

2. Menu View > Toggle UI (hides all UI items except the document window)

Hi Thomaso.  Forgive me if my terminology isn't always clear, I'll try my best!  Attached below is an example of what I mean by "screen".  When I first used this Affinity free trial I got into the screen below, and as I remember it I could go from here to a Welcome screen, and then onwards to the UI.  From the screen below the Menu button takes me to a screen which gives links to videos, tutorials etc for all Affinity products.  It doesn't bring up a choice of "Studio", or "Toggle UI".  I think that what I need is how to get to the Welcome screen, have you any ideas on that please?  Thanks, John

??? This is screen from web (internet), not from Affinity application!
You must run Affinity application, not web. Try click Start (bottom left windows icon), and in application list search Affinity Photo, and click to her icon.

As mentioned in previous posts the "Welcome..." screen is an option of the Affinity app's "Help" menu.

Can you show a screenshot of your unfolded Help menu?

If you don't see the app menu bar then the Fullscreen mode might be active. In macOS it's CTRL-CMD-F / (I don't know for Windows).

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, John. :)

As a first-time user you may not be aware that it isn’t a good idea to make your email address available on a public forum, since it’s likely to be ‘harvested’ by spammers. I strongly recommend, therefore, that you follow the link below to change your display name:
