Exporting to PSD, a checkbox in the extended export options is "Compatibility Mode."

Compatibility with what, and are there tradeoffs to be aware of aside from compatibility with... whatever.

Did look in the help file and did not find any guidance there.

Cheers

The Export Options page in the help file for Photo says:

Quote
  • Compatibility mode—when selected, the exported file will be compatible with other applications which do not support some features (file size may also increase). If this option is off, the exported file may not be readable by other applications (depending on the features used in the image).

The help file for Publisher seems to be missing the above information.

In PS PSD compatibility mode means that composite image will be added to the file in addition of layers. Thus app that cannot read layers can read composite image (that is just the flattened content of layers).
