I would do the same. To reproduce the original, start by making a base shape for the entire area and filling it with solid blue. Duplicate that shape, give the duplicate a blue-to-violet linear gradient fill and adjust the top left-hand corner to reveal the lighter blue from the bottom layer. Duplicate again, give the duplicate a lighter violet solid fill and adjust the nodes to give you the much smaller shape you need for the bottom right-hand corner.

Once you have the three shapes in place you can amend their fills as you choose.
