Mark Reeves
Brand new mac mini in Summer 2020 macOS Catalina 32 GB RAM I was away on vacation the week of 8/1 through 8/8. I ran app store updates when I got home, including Affinity Designer. If I have a PSD file open in Affinity Designer, I notice input lag when I'm typing or pasting content or navigating with the keyboard arrows in other apps in the OS. It's best described as a snag, where what I enter is buffered for a second and then suddenly fires. This goes away when I close any files I have open in Designer or quit Designer. I'm typically working with PSDs in Designer for reference while I'm coding, so this is very noticeable to me as my focus is not in Designer—it's in an IDE to write code. This is the value of Designer for me. I can successfully open any PSDs my colleagues send me without maintaining Photoshop. Staff Gabe Posted August 17, 2020 Staff Share Posted August 17, 2020 Hi both, Can you attach screen recordings of this in action please?
Mark Reeves
There's absolutely no way I can post a screen recording of this, as it's random and intermittent. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful here, but this only occurs when Designer is open with a PSD open and it happens throughout my OS. But I cannot reproduce it on demand. I've opened up Activity Monitor and haven't seen anything there *while I'm looking.* It's been happening since I installed App Store updates, including Designer. I'm also not sure how a screen recording would convey that what appears on screen lags vs input on my keyboard. As I described, I type or enter keys, and randomly, intermittently it lags on screen by a second or two. Mark Reeves
Note that this affects scrolling with the trackpad, too.
dopeNL
I have also experienced the spinning wheel of "hang on your gonna have to wait a minute" for quite a few operations, and indeed is random. I have to say after using it for an evening of editing some artwork images, all vector no pixel layers. I got feed up and opened the same file in a back up of the previous release of designer. I had no problems or spinning wheels and didn't have time to notice any of the new features in the up-date. So not missing any of them as of yet. Perhaps when there is a future up-date I will see if I experience the same lag and spinning wheel of death.... Just my experience sp far with the new 1.8.4 release, other than that I love the software.! Cheers dopeNL. macOS Mojave (by the way,) Edited August 20, 2020 by dopeNL
Staff MEB Posted August 21, 2020 Staff Share Posted August 21, 2020 Hi everyone, Are you experiencing these delays consistently with all files or it's limited to just a few? Is anyone willing to provide a file that consistently lags on your system, for us to try please? I can provide uploads links if you wish to keep the file private. Thanks. dopeNL
I haven't created a new document with the later version, just opening projects created in 1.8.1 So not able to clarify if its an import problem. Not to mention that 1.8.1 sometime crashes when you tr to convert an image into a swatch pallet. I think I have mentioned this before also. At this time most of my projects have been pre-created with an earlier version 1.8.1 I will perhaps try and create a 1.8.4 Project once the requirement of a new project comes up, Would only be a little concerned as Im aware that perhaps I may have a problem opening with an earlier version if I have the spinning wheel of never never gonna work..... I see windows got an update 1.8.5 Dose this address the spinning wheel of never never ??
Staff MEB Posted September 7, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 7, 2020 Hi dopeNL, Do you mind uploading one or two of these files created in v1.8.1 that lags when you open it in v1.8.4? Here's the upload link. Thank you. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
