Affinity Photo - Paint Brush Tool

Recommended Posts

The paint brush tool was working fine...then it wasn't.  I was using black just fine.  Then, went to use white...and nothing.

I've scoured the forum and the web...and nothing.

I reset brushes in preferences.  I reset user default settings.

Still not working right.  But, it IS painting white.  A little bit.  Taera_Future-paintbrusherror.thumb.png.e8f051980ff0d2b8d1293c8e0f00c068.pngPlease, see attached image.

Check to see if you inadvertently selected the Color Replacement tool, which is on the same flyout as the Paintbrush tool. IF you do not have Use Shift Key to cycle tool groups checked in Preferences>Tools, then each time you use the keyboard shortcut to select the paintbrush tool it will cycle through all the brushes on that tool group.

It's the paint brush tool.  I rarely use keyboard shortcuts...and never to select tools.

You can, also, see where I tried to paint the "white"...and it painted...white

Thanks for your screenshot - it would appear the Paint Brush Tool is working as expected, are you still unable to paint on certain layers?

I think the OP may be trying to paint white on the mask layer

At the moment they have both the pixel layer (called image(1)) and the mask layer selected.

To paint in white just on the mask layer, click the mask layer's thumbnail so that only the mask layer is highlighted

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

The Layers panel in your screenshot shows the blend mode set to ‘Screen’. Try changing it to ‘Normal’.

The overlay (ring) needs to be set to screen.

Black becomes transparent (i.e. disappears) when the blend mode is set to ‘Screen’. If you change the blend mode to ‘Multiply’ you’ll find that the white disappears instead.

The ring has a black background...

The overlay is not my problem.

There’s obviously something I’m misunderstanding about the process, Nita! I’ll leave it to others to continue this discussion.

Actually you haven’t painted white onto the mask, you’ve painted white onto the pixel layer...

On image (1), why not invert the layer Layer > Invert, then use Filters > Colours > Erase white paper, then layer > invert again to get a transparent layer with the blue hoop on. Then create a new mask and paint black onto the mask to hide parts of the hoop.

So in this example that’s exactly what I’ve written above.

Notice that the mask is already all white, so painting white on it will have no effect. If the intent is to hide some of the glowing ring, then black should be painted on the mask.
