JerryYachats
Thanks for the quick reply to the above i would like to add a gaussian blur to part of an image or cast a shadow beginning at a point in the image. also I would like to alter the dimension of a gradient mask i.e. stretch the oval mask in only height or width and rotate it Jerry
Aad Slingerland
About applying a gaussian blur to a PART of an image. Do not use a layer effect but use a Life Filter added to the background layer. Adjust the gaussian blur as much as you like (can be changed afterwards). Select the Gausian Blur layer and invert it with Ctrl-I. By inverting the layer mask the mask becomes black effectivily hiding the blur effect. Select the Paintbrush tool, select white color in the colors panel and (optionally) change brush attributes such as size, hardness. Paint with white on the the Gausian Blur layer to reveal the blur effect. BTW I'm googling for a way to record a screen video but not yet found a good one. GarryP
Live Filters are probably best for this kind of thing but are only available in Photo and the OP didn’t say which application(s) they have access to.Layer Effects (fx), are always applied to the whole layer to which they are applied. However, depending on the exact requirements, an Effect could be applied to part of a duplicate layer which has been clipped/cropped/masked appropriately, but we would need more information about the circumstances. Jerry: If you tell us which application(s) you have, and give us a visual idea of what you want, then we can advise better.
JerryYachats
I think the reply by Aad provided a creative and excellent reply to my question about graduating to the edge of a gaussian blur thanks Jerry
