Can't see bleed outline

Recommended Posts

I've set up two A4 documents in Publisher 1.8.3 Mac (OS 10.14.6). I've set bleed to 5mm but if I go to the View menu and choose 'Show Bleed' - nothing. I need to see this. I've been using InDesign for 15 years so I know what I'm doing and I send documents to a printer regularly. I'd hoped that Affinity Publisher would replace my aging InDesign installation before I have to jump to Adobe's subscription model but I'm struggling here.

In all Affinity apps the background (workspace) gray can get custom set and may cause the bleed guide to disappear if the grays are too similar. For instance:

The object's top edge is snapping to the bleed – but the bleed guide is invisible:

A darker or lighter background makes the bleed appear:

In AD there is an additional issue with object visibility in the bleed area. While without artboards objects may appear in the bleed...

... they partially disappear in the bleed area if artboards are used:

Then the Clip to Canvas setting has no influence, it is unticked and grayed out for artboards:
