Designer or Photo on a 12" Retina Macbook?

Recommended Posts

I was going to get a 12" MacBook for my wife a couple of weeks ago and thought that I would finally get to see how it performed - but in the shop we ended up falling for the 13" MacBook Pro Retina instead - so I'm still not able to give you any advice, sorry :(  The only reason we wavered was just because the 12" looked so delicate and we've got a 2-and-a-half year old running around the house so worried it may not survive very long! ;)

From what I've read, it has similar performance to a couple of years old MacBook Air 13" - which is really not too shabby at all for normal use - and an absolutely astonishing feat given the size and weight of the thing! :)

Let us know if you ever find out how it performs! :)

I can't comment on the new 12" but I'm running Photo on a mid-2011 13" Air (1.8 GHz i7, 4GB RAM, 384 MB VRAM) and performance is excellent.  No noticeable lag in painting, transforming or moving.  Real-time preview is very snappy.

I don't know if any help, but may be worthwhile waiting for the new Intel Skylake processors coming to to MacBooks, if you haven'y already bought one. http://www.macrumors.com/2015/08/11/skylake-processors-for-macbook-air/

It could always be 'worth waiting' for the next Apple anything - but then we might never have one. I'm working on a 'loaded' riMac (which I absolutely love!) but I have all but metaphysical certitude that the next one will be superior to this one.

Yes you're right.

But the new MacBooks should be available in few weeks. That's worth the wait in that case  :)

I'll give a try this weekend on my 2013 Air. 11" is not great to work on design or photos but it can help for a quick job.

I hear yah!  We have gone through the "Terrible 2's" phase with our girls.  My wife's 13" Air has withstood drops, bangs, peanut-butter fingers and spills.

Still working great (though battery is tired) for my wife's needs (heavy Pintrest, some photo, mostly web and streaming video/music)

I am sure you are going to LOVE the new 13" Macbook Pro.  Love to hear how Serif's apps perform on it.

Cheers!

Thanks, everyone. I've got a 2013 13"Air, and the Affinity stuff is terrific on it. Am just looking to run smaller, and the 11" is too small. I still have a lot of residual affection for my old 12" Powerbook from the early 2000s.

If/when I get my hands on a 12", I'll report back.

Ahhhh ! I switched on that machine

I just loved it ! I probably still have it somewhere and I'm sure it will still boot up like a charm.

Nobody bought a 12" Retina MacBook?

I want one mostly for web development but I'm still curious about how affinity software would run on it. I'm so in doubt by that 1.1GHz processor. It. Just feels like very sloppy and not powerful enough. Like who would buy the 1.6GHz iMac or 1.4GHz Mac mini. Nobody wants them because you don't trust the lower processor to be build for the future.

Hardware
 Mac mini (late-2014), 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, Intel Iris 5100 Graphics  iPad Air 16GB White

Software I love, and you should get
Affinity Desinger - Affinity Photo - Sketch - Coda - CodeKit - iA Writer - Dropbox - 1Password
