Cut out part of text inside an image

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I am new to Affinity, and have tried watching several videos but cannot figure this out.

I want the black section of text (showing behind the & PNG image) to be cut out (transparent)

Can anyone help me figure this out? I appreciate any help in advance :)

I'm probably being a bit dim, but what do you want the black text to be cut out from? It's a bit hard to understand what end result you are aiming for.

Inside the & symbol, there is black (part of text).

I would like the inside of the & symbol to be transparent.

  1. Type the & and duplicate the &
  2. Use boolean Divide on the duplicate & - this will give you 3 curve layers, delete the bottom one of those three layers
  3. The remaining two curve layers fill with a colour
  4. Change their blend mode to erase

You should have this...

If you want to place anything below like a coloured background you will need to group the highlighted layers first, like so...

The group feature uses a special blend mode called Passthrough, think of it as “ what happens in the group stays in the group. meaning the erase blend mode will only affect layers in the group and below them in the group.

Okay so I was being dim :) That makes perfect sense now.

As your "&" is a pixel layer you cannot do steps 1 & 2 above unless you remake it as a text object. You could just draw two circles to encompass each part to be cut out and use those whilst keeping your pixel layer.

If you use the erase blend mode, keep in mind that will trigger rasterisation on export to svg/pdf. If you need vector output you will have to convert the "w" characters to curves, "add" them together (tools top right of workspace) and "subtract" each circle from that.

Missed that one 🤔

Steps amended.

Bouncing off BofG vector option, is to use the Create Compound option under the Layers menu, this will keep the text editable. You still need to do steps 1 & 2image.png.daace0e9e64d990c620a712424f77fc4.png

Font used is Futura Bold because it allows the W’s to blend better when overlapped, also makes for a punchy logo.

Hey guys, you were incredibly helpful with my last question. I was wondering if you can help me with something similar?

I have two PNG images on this page. Where the black silhouette is, I would like it to be transparent (so for instance, if this was on a tee shirt you would see the tee shirt material where the three girls are). Can you teach me how to take out that particular shape from the lower layer image to reveal the background?

Thanks in advance for your help :)
