Black and white background

Hi dave b,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

Yes, it's possible. Use the selection tools to select the buildings (the Selection Brush Tool may help to get a rough selection quickly), then invert the selection (Select ▹ Invert Pixel Selection) and add a Black and White adjustment (Layer ▹ New Adjustment Layer ▹ Black & white Adjustment). Adjust the colour sliders to control the conversion to black and white and close the dialog. While the selection is still active you can click the Refine button on the context toolbar (the toolbar right above the work area) when a selection tool is active to fine tune the mask associated with the Black & White adjustment if necessary. Double-clicking the adjustment layer in the Layers panel also let you edit the adjustment again if needed.

Here's two videos that may help:

You have to create a fill layer for the Background (menu Layer ▸ New Fill Layer) and change it's colour to black in the Colours panel.

Move this layer to the background so it's behind the flower image. Then select the flower with the Selection Brush Tool, press the Refine button in the context toolbar, change the Output to Mask on the bottom of the Refine Selection dialog and use the dialog controls to refine the selection of the flower (check this video tutorial to learn about refining selections). Finally press Apply. This will create a mask to hide all elements of the image except the selected flower.

Not totally sure if this is what you're trying to achieve...
