Removing Backgrounds in Designer

I opened a black and white .eps file in Designer, and I want to remove the white background, making it transparent. I switch to the pixel persona, then click the eraser tool, but it will only erase the black, not the white. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, @Techman2872.

If you only want to make the white background effectively transparent (so that whatever is behind it shows through) you can simply select the layer in the Layers panel and set its blend mode to ‘Multiply’. If you want to make the white background actually transparent (so that you see a transparency chequerboard when there’s nothing on a lower layer) you can use blend ranges to achieve the desired result:

Try enabling "Transparent background" option in the colour section of File>Document Setup...

A grey and white checkerboard will appear wherever the document is transparent.

Sometimes some .eps files simply have a white background at the bottom of the layers, you just have to hide or delete it.

At the top of the Source Layer Ranges graph you’ll see a line joining a black node on the left to a white node on the right. It’s at the top of the graph because everything is at 100% opacity, but if you drag the right-hand end all the way down you’ll make the white pixels in your image 0% opaque (i.e. 100% transparent). At this point the black pixels will still be 100% opaque but everything else will be semitransparent; to restore full opacity to all the non-white pixels, drag the left-hand end of the line straight across towards the right, stopping when the white pixels begin to reappear.
