imposing one picture on top of another using blend mode

Recommended Posts

land1fin.jpgI am trying to achieve the pic on the right from the two pics on the left. in a previous post I was instructed to use the blend mode and then get rid of the parts I don't want. I am working in Publisher as that is the only persona I have. What tool or tools do I use to get rid of the unwanted parts? Using the crop tool doesn't get it... As I am still a newbie, please give me step by step instructions.

TIA

Since APub doesn't have a tool to edit pixel content you would use a workaround to achieve a similarly cropped appearance:

1. With the pen tool draw a shape (Curve) around the flowers on a layer above the flower image.
2. Move the image layer near the curve layer's text label until it shows an intended, horizontal highlight bar between both layers.
3. Release the mouse.

This way the image will occur clipped by the drawn curve. Moving or transforming the curve layer will also move the image, unless you have "Lock Children" ticked in the context toolbar. You still can select and move or transform  the image layer solely.

Additionally you can use a blend mode, applied to the curve layer, to visually merge the clipped flower image with the background image a little.

To achieve a more blurry edge for the clipped flowers you could apply a Gaussian Blur Effect to the curve layer. Since this will also affect the image inside you can place a copy of the curve/flower but without effect and a slightly, subtle downsized curve layer (tick "Lock Children" before scaling the curve).
