Coley Bag
Hi, I am running Affinity Design 1.8.3 on my iMac mac OS Catalina. I create a document, work on it and save it, when I go to print it for the first time Affinity crashes. After this it prints fine, it's always on the first print of a file. It's driving me a bit mad, please help. Thanks
Staff Dan C Posted July 22, 2020 Staff Share Posted July 22, 2020 Hi @Coley Bag, Sorry to hear you're having trouble! I'm going to need a copy of your crash log to investigate the cause of this. Please go to Applications > Utilities and open the Console app. Crash Reports from our apps can be found in the User Reports section. You can Right Click the required Crash Report and select Reveal in Finder, then attach a copy of these reports here. Many thanks in advance

Staff Dan C Posted July 23, 2020 Staff Share Posted July 23, 2020 Many thanks for your report and my apologies for the delayed response! Can you please confirm for me: Does your document have artboards? Did you have more than one document open when you went to print? How many documents are you printing at once, just one or multiple? Many thanks
Coley Bag
Morning Dan, At first I thought the problem may be that the document didn’t have any art boards, so I started creating docs with them, but it didn’t make any difference. I then thought it maybe I was trying to print before saving the document, but that didn’t make any difference either. I usually have more than one document open, but I wouldn’t like to say if that’s always the case. I usually print 1 art board at a time, but some of my documents contain 1 art board , some contain 3 or 4. Thanks Nicole
Staff Dan C Posted July 23, 2020 Staff Share Posted July 23, 2020 Thanks for that information - we've had a previous report of this issue and the crash report almost exactly matches yours. This user was opening 2 documents, one with artboards and one without, sending the artboard document to print, then sending the single canvas document to print and this caused a crash - do you even send multiple jobs to the printer at once? When printing off artboards, do you always print one at a time - or does this not seem to affect the crashing behaviour? Does this happen in other documents, or only when you're printing from one specific document with lots of Artboards?
Coley Bag
No I tend not to send multiple jobs to the printer at once. It’s usually when I first create a document, so it will probably only have one art board on it to start with. It seems to happen on all new documents, once I re-open and try again, it seems to be ok. Can I ask what hopefully is not a daft question?! I’m a convert from Illustrator. When you create a new file in Illustrator, you automatically get an art board. Why is it when you create a new file in Affinity Design, you get what looks like an art broad, but it’s not and you have to create an art board? (Hope this makes sense!!) Thanks
Staff Dan C Posted July 27, 2020 Staff Share Posted July 27, 2020 Apologies for the delayed response! Thanks for letting me know, I've had another user over the weekend re-install their printer drivers & this resolved the crashing behaviour within Affinity. Could you please try re-installing your printer drivers, and let me know if this helps? Many thanks once again

You can choose to create an Artboard when creating the document, simply make sure the following option is ticked -
Coley Bag
Hi Dan, thanks for your response. It seems to be working better now thanks, I will keep an eye on it. I knew you could create an artboard when you create a new document, I just wondered why you didn't automatically get one. Thank you for all your help on this and your prompt replies, much appreciated. Dan C
