Fields Info Not Exporting in PDFs

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to configure a pdf so that it will have more visibility to search engines when posted online.  I can put a ton of info in the Fields of the .afpub document, but it doesn't export in the PDF.  When I export to the PDF formant, and then open the PDF in Affinity Publisher, there is no data in the Fields.

Please advise.

Try looking at the actual PDF if you want to see what's in it, rather than looking at what happens when you import it into Publisher again.

I just set some Fields, and exported my .afpub file to PDF (For Export) and then opened it in Acrobat Reader, and got this:

So, the information is getting into the PDF file.

However, you're right that upon Opening the PDF, the data is not transferred from the PDF file to the Fields panel. I don't know if that's a bug, or if Serif would consider it a Feature Request.

Unfortunately, Affinity ignores Field information when importing/opening.

Thanks.

It's probably appropriate to ignore them when Importing (e.g., File > Place) but I think there are good arguments to be made for capturing them when Opening a PDF file.

As can be seen from the linked thread, Serif has not yet commented on whether this is an intention or a mistake.
I agree with you that it's okay with Place - if every placed document changed Field information, it would be a mess. However, in the case of an Open document, there is no reason why its Field information should not be taken over.

If Serif ever decides for this to happen,

Do you mean retrieving Fields information from an Open pdf file? Just for interest, what is the reason why I shouldn't want to load the information stored in the Open File? If I want to change them, I can do it - it doesn't matter if something has loaded, I still have to enter it again.

I may open more than one and not in a specific order. Should they update with only the first? Each one? But regardless, I do know that unless I was the author of the PDF, the info is going to change in all likelihood (well, even if I was the author probably).

If one needs/has to change the info, what's the purpose of loading it in the first place?

And what is the problem? If I Open (not Place) one/more documents, they are still separate documents with their separate Fields information.

If I Open (not Place) a PDF document, then mostly to make some editing/correction in it, and then preserving the original Fields information is essential, or I take/copy some text/object from it, and then I'm not interested in the loaded Fields information (so let them load) - my Fields information is already in my working/target document.

And, so what exactly is wrong with having an option? Would not an option suit everyone?

As regards opening to correct verbiage or images, I'll use the original files. Editing a pdf for any sort of correction requires more work and involves an element of risk.

But regardless...

I never fill out document information. So I would not desire to have to remove/delete that information.

If I noticed so, no one, not even me, questions the appropriateness of setting/customizing the behavior of the application. I was just wondering why not to retrieve Fields information from an Open Document, as any text editor (Word type) does. How do you deal with them?

Oh, ok.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Other than my own use of Word, for which I don't care what MickySoft puts into the author field, the Word files I receive go into a layout application and the metadata isn't transferred.

Why would I want that information? I understand the single use point you mentioned regarding an edit of a pdf, but is that the only use case?

Like I wrote, I don't need it, I don't want it. I don't care what Serif pre-fills APub's fields with (i.e. I'm not going to bother removing it). But I would prefer they don't even do that.

I am not sure about the other fields but in APub if you set the Author field with no document open, that will become the default for new documents. I set it to "me" but I think setting it to a space character also works, resulting in an empty Author field default.
