Paint Brush width: Erase Brush width: Are you perhaps looking at the stroke width (which is irrelevant for painting or erasure strokes)? I'm talking of the pixel persona, switching from Paint brush to eraser, whether by double tapping the apple pencil or using the toolbar. Changing one affects the other on my end.
