Hi will1960,

Select the layer you want to make transparent, click on the Mask Layer icon in the Layers panel to create a Mask and select it clicking on its thumbnail.

Then change to the Gradient tool and drag it over the canvas. Change the gradient stop colours to control the transparency: white will show the image, black will make it transparent. Greys will be more or less transparent depending on their value.
