Hello,

I found this beautiful, tech looking font on a website.

Do you know what font this could be - or which one is like this: very strong control over the shape, sans-serif, minimalist, not pushy (there are some tech looking fonts that really overdo it)

thanks! Any font recommendation that goes into this direction is welcome.

If you want to find out which font is used in a web page component, and you’re not averse to a bit of ‘technical digging’, you can use a web page “Inspector” to see how the web page has been created. (Most modern web browsers have some sort of “Inspector” but it might be called something different.)
My attached video shows how to quickly use such a tool in Firefox to check the font name used in a couple of places.
Note: The browser goes down the list of font names until it finds one it can use so the one you see on-screen might not be the first one in the list given in the Inspector.

For those wondering, the OP’s screenshot comes from this page: https://www.alexperry.com.au/product/alex-3/ detective.gif

The name ‘ALEX’ is in Hind Bold. The price and description are in Varela Round (at two different font sizes).

The above font families are both available for free from Google Fonts or Font Squirrel.

At these point sizes inspecting the code is pretty much the only way (BTW, Firefox has also "Font" tab that directly shows the typeface for a selection)!

I used my font detector app on the screenshot, but it recognized Varela Rounded only after I had typed the text using the correct font (but only as the third candidate)! (There is also an unrounded version of Varela, which at this point size looks pretty much identical, but it has a dollar sign without a uniform vertical bar).

The top one is a screenshot of the original, but of the lower versions one is a real thing, and another is a manipulated mix of two other popular fonts:

Thank you, Alex!

Also for the font tab tip.

I'll add Varela Rounded to my font book.

Yes, it's from the Alex Perry's site. Did you find it via the "Alex" dress google search?

We have two candidates: Varela rounded and Hind Bold for the "ALEX"

There are so many Google fonts that are very similar to one another. So could it be that "Varela Rounded" and "Hind Bold" are the pretty much the same?

They are quite similar in some ways, aren’t they! However, Varela Round is ... er ... rounded, whereas Hind Bold isn’t.

Hind Bold it is.

And its lighter variants for the description.

Rounded stuff in fonts gives me the Comic Sans Rash.

Or rather, Hind Bold for the name but Varela Round for the description (and the price). ;)

I feel you, I've personally not liked the tubular feel of these kinds of fonts but they are of course useful when this appearance is needed. I do not think that they give anything extra at small point sizes, as in this case, it can be visually discerned from a non-rounded version practically only by the dollar sign. Having said that, I think that Varela is a well designed font that works well especially as a web font.

Other fonts by the same designer:

I like Varela - but isn't it a bit cinemascope. It would be interesting to see a font that is a bit slimmer, higher than wide in this same minimalistic design.

I'm also looking into Bauhaus design typefaces. I just try to avoid overly "styled" fonts.

For reading text, e.g. essays, longer texts like stories and novels, I prefer well balanced serif fonts.

By the way, what are your favorite serif fonts? I'm using Georgia a lot, and Garamont, not sure why I don't use Times New Roman at all... an emotional thing?... can't remember getting a blackmail notice set in Times New Roman... which would explain it.
