What workaround in particular are you cross referencing to out of the box?

Currently the hyperlink types Page, Anchor, URL, File and Email are supported. They are set via the Hyperlink Panel and Anchor Panel.
Here two small PDFs for a test:

v183 hyperlinks A.pdf 34.96 kB · 10 downloads

v183 hyperlinks B.pdf 35.06 kB · 3 downloads

@thomaso - it has to auto-list headings, manually creating anchors is disruptive and time consuming.

In my case no cross references is a total blocker. Workarounds are not just time consuming - time is money (!) - but are also a major risc. Error prone. I cannot afford errors.

I am fortunate enough to have InDesign - even PagePlus X9 - at my disposal - although I would only save new projects in an old legacy format in an extreme emergency. So InDesign it is.

I understand Serif wanted to release something early - time is money in their case as well - just writing this to underline why it should be a priority ASAP.

If only I had known before I got stuck in, but you don't generally start cross referencing until you've got a lot of content in place.

No way back really now.

(off topic, but does anyone else find placing and frames/images painful?)

LG
ITGimmi

Translation:
Sorry that I am now involved in this topic in German. The language just suits me better. An automatically generated Google translation follows at the end of the German text.

I hope I can get the topic of "cross-references" rolling again.

I am very interested in revising a software user manual (created with Word 2016 - 257 pages) and would like to use the publisher for this. In this manual, which I have created, there are many cross-references in the form of "see page 123".

In the German “Affinity Publisher WORKBOOK” I have already found such cross-references on many pages. Only on the pages on which the contributors introduce themselves are referred to their chapters with a page number.
The preface mentions that the workbook was designed and produced with Affinity Publisher. Now the question arises whether the inclusion of the cross-references with (e.g. "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - Cover on page 362") were entered by hand when creating this excellent workbook. If a new page should be added to this workbook, revising the page numbers would be a lot of work.

Please show me an automated way to manage and update cross-references.

It is best for the developers to include the cross-references in an upcoming update. You made such great software. The cross-references will probably not be an unsolvable problem. Thanks in advance for your feedback ... or for a new update =)

They have to save something for 2.0

Serif has already delivered a great program with the publisher in version 1.x. I think they still have a lot of great ideas for 2.0. But I and many others would be happy if the cross-references, in the form described, were already included in 1.9.x. They can then improve it in 2.0 ;-)

Furthermore, the question "How were the cross-references in the workbook implemented"?

I do not know how they did it in the Workbook but there is already a way that allows cross references. Even though it is just a workaround it could be used with a limited number of referenes that stay updated if they move around:

d.

Affinity Designer 1 & 2   |   Affinity Photo 1 & 2   |   Affinity Publisher 1 & 2
Affinity Designer 2 for iPad   |   Affinity Photo 2 for iPad   |   Affinity Publisher 2 for iPad

Windows 11 64-bit - Core i7 - 16GB - Intel HD Graphics 4600 & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M

Translation:

Thanks for the article. Maybe it will be useful to me in the upcoming manual project. Unfortunately, it only solves the cross-referencing problem for this particular type of problem.

Since in my texts many places within a text on a page, for example, "Further information on the topic can be found on page 123" or "Information on the function can be found in chapter ABC from page 123" is unfortunately not of any help to me.

But the function described is already running in the right direction and so the last step to the cross-references cannot be so far in programming terms.

@"Developer at Serif": Please implement this function. Even if you build this into one of the upcoming 1.9x versions, I'll stay true to you with 2.x =)

It will work for all of those situations. The question is whether it is too complex for you to use.

There is no doubt that this workaround can be used. This is exactly what the chaining of the text frames and the field for the corresponding page number are for.
However, since the same page (or text frame) is often referred to from several places in my document, it makes it cumbersome and error-prone.

Here is an excerpt from the manual with a few cross-references.

I only want to have one field that allows me to specify a named anchor point as a cross-reference and this field then expresses the page number. As it is already implemented in Word, for example.

As we didn't get a new Beta version now for nearly a month, I am hoping that version 2.0 is coming up next and that it integrates the most wanted features like footnotes and cross references. Both features are needed for all serious publishing that goes beyond posters and small booklets. I am waiting for these features now since Publisher came up and fear that without those features in 2.0 many users will return to the software they used before.

I was able to implement figure numbers using the custom paragraph style, and I think it is actually an elegant solution.  However, I really need to be able to insert references to the figures that would also update automatically (such as "see Figure 7.2).  Since the "Figure 7.2" is being put into the caption automatically, it seems it would not be that much more to be able to reference the appropriate Figure.  It would have to be "pinned" or something like that, of course, so that the reference corresponds to the right Figure... Such a feature would save hours and hours of time for upkeep of a technical manual, where features (and their descriptive figures) are added and changed frequently.

+1 for proper cross-references to figures, tables, pages

I was really pleased to secure the resources and run a trial with the whole AP stack for out technical documentation department but after finding out that we can neither correctly import our currently existing documentation from Word - containing several cross-references, nor create cross-references in new "AP only" files this was the end of the "free 90 day trial" at the end of week one...

Once cross-referencing is available and with its easy asset handling I can see many technical writers switch because everyone likes to publish good looking documents BUT correctness/consistent documents will always be the primary concern.

Considering its very attractive price and by applying an "only basic features persona" I could imagine even a fair amount of business people writing/applying to tenders finding some use because often they face the same dilemma of referencing additional info, yet a good looking document will subtly draw more attention, i. e. increase chances.

If it were included it would be in the Release Notes.

My autobiography is 500 pages long with about 600 png illustrations. This broke word on the MAC and I ported the document to affinity publisher. All good and wonderful except that affinity publisher does not support auto numbering of tables, figure, etc. and of course cross references which is the theme of this thread. How I wish Serif would wake up and support these features. I can live with some of the other esoteric features missing from Word, but auto numbering and cross referencing, especially cross referencing is a killer.

Affinity Photo is such a great tool but can be made even better ....

Auto-numbering is to some extent supported. Cross-referencing the auto-numbered objects isn't.

It's obvious that AP's lack of cross-references as capable as MS Word, or Open Office, is a deal-breaker for a specific group of users - technical and academic writers. If AP has a native scripting capability, perhaps it could be used to automate the tedious manual method of using links that's been mentioned. Alternatively, this missing feature could be a great opportunity for a third-party developer to create a cross-reference plug-in, then license it to Serif when it's proven its value.

If the criticism of InDesign's running headers is that they don't capture heading hierarchies (bread crumbs) like FrameMaker, dtp.com offers a capable cross-reference plug-in.
