Cannot save afpub document

Recommended Posts

Hello I have an issue with a very simple publisher file, currently consisting of 1 page, a couple of text frames some of which are images converted to text frames and saved as an asset and picture frame. Today when moving the picture frame the application crashed. Going back into the docuement I remade the changes and went to save but am no longer able to. I get the following message

image.png.681870fb1771810570f699738bbb9f96.png

I get the same message if i try to save it as a new document using save as.

I am running the latest version of publisher (1.8.3.641) and am running on windows 10 (latest updates installed)

I am able to create document and these save ok, it just seems to be an issue with this one file. The concern here is if this was to happen mid way through editing a much bigger file.

I have attached the original file in case it helps to troubleshoot.

Thanks

Hi @Lemonsprig,

We've seen this before but have always struggled to reproduce it happening, unfortunately this file has become a little corrupt, although since it's quite small I've recovered it (I had to replace a text frame on the master page). That file is attached.

I don't suppose you have any more information that might help me reproduce this happening? Did you use the "Edit Detached" mode at all when working?

On page 1 of the corrupt file there is a pinned inline object (this is the dodgy object that I cleared), did you pin this at all before this happened?

Hi Jon,

Thanks for looking into this. From what I can recall....

  1. Added the image into the picture frame on the bottom right, and then selected scale to minimum fit as although it is a small image when placed in publisher they seem to come in larger.
  2. Used the pan icon to move the image in the picture frame. It was at this point that publisher crashed and closed completely

When I re-opened publisher I realised that I had inadvertently placed all content on the master page. So I started to cut and paste it from the master page into page 1 including re-adding the image and scaling it as outlined in page 2. When I had it all as I wanted I went to save the document and got the error mentioned in the original post, and had to abandon it as I could not do a save as.

I did not use edit detached and I am not entirely sure what that is for. I am not entirely certain what you mean by the dodgy pinned inline object either, and I cannot see what you are referring to either on the file you have corrected or the original one I uploaded, but as I said I am not 100% sure what I am looking for.

Interestingly however whilst just clicking on the master layers whilst looking at page 1, (trying to locate edit detatched and the dodgy object) I was clicking between the layers and affinity crashed and closed. I went back in and tried again but could not recreate the issue. Until i realised you needed to right click the master layer and not one of the layers inside. When I did this the menu appeared and I could see the edit detached option, but before I could do anything affinity crashed again.

I am not sure if any of that helps at all. Happy to troubleshoot with you further if I can assist.

Regards,

Thanks, there's some useful information in there that will help! Just knowing that you didn't use edit detached is helpful (for reference, it's a way of editing a detached version of a master page on a specific page, allowing you to make unique changes)

The object i'm referring to is shown in the attached screenshot, I'm curious if you made this an inline object intentionally? This is the object that was causing the trouble

Was this on the resaved version I sent or the original?

Hi Jon,

thanks for the clarification. Although I must admit I am a little bit confused now. That particular object does not show as being inline on my machine. I even re-downloaded the original file I attached in the first post and it does not show as being inline. I would say however that I would not have done this intentionally, but that is not to say I didn't I am pretty new to the product and publishing apps in general, and whilst I have watched a few tutorials I am still finding my way around.

It was the original file that crashed and closed again and it has actually just happened again (on the original) so I think there is definitely some corruption with the file itself and on that basis, unless you feel that there is any benefit trying to troubleshoot further I am happy to leave things as they are. What do you think?

If you work from the one I resaved it should be more stable, it's fine to leave it here though.

Thanks for the info and hopefully we'll be able to reproduce getting a file into this state (which makes it a lot easier to fix!)

If it ends up happening again let us know, along with what was being done before it happened!
