Why not sort it by how recently a given filter was used instead, so that the most recently used filter is closest to the mouse pointer when the menu is opened, saving travel time for the pointer before reaching the option? Good UX designers also perform A-B testing on different user groups when they don't have conclusive data (the case @carl123 mentioned above). They also use scientific methods like Eye Tracking and so on. I have seen quite a few interface designs facing reality in labs - needing a major overhaul even though they were well prepared and approved by departments/customers with deep knowledge about their users. That is why I always accept invitations to observe (from behind a on-way-window) user testing. I really love to watch what *real users* do. The test groups would be very suprirsed knowing how many people with laptops and cameras are watching them through one-way window during the testing. And we do that even for simple packaging designs, poster and banner designs, corporate identity tests and even for custom font tests. Because if you are serious about anything - you need to know what impact a product/design has ... what impression it makes... you need to know if people understand it, accept it, use it... BUY IT! And of course... the most interesting part is to know why some people do NOT use it or buy it. Much more interesting and rewarding than listening to the same 10 happy customers.
