Staff MEB Posted July 6, 2020 Staff Share Posted July 6, 2020 Hi Vera Zbinden, Welcome to Affinity Forums Affinity apps are only able to import Ai files that contain a PDF stream (files must be saved with Create PDF Compatible File checked) - the rest of the Ai file data is proprietary/closed. Also, objects placed outside the artboards (in the pasteboard area) are not imported since Illustrator doesn't include them in the PDF stream (so they must be moved/placed on an artboard to be imported in Affinity apps). Not really a macOS thing, of course: almost any browser on any OS will try to correct ‘artboard’ to ‘dartboard’ until you teach it to behave itself. 🎯 jmwellborn 1 Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.4.1 (iPad 7th gen)
JAL
I have the same issue. I export ai files from rhino 3D and my version does not offer me an option to check PDF compatibility. It was slightly dissapointing as it was the first action I tried with my shiny new Affinity Designer software. Have been using Coreldraw so far on my IBM and Corel has no import issues and is fairly robust when it comes to different formats. I gues I'll change my preferred file formats then... Staff MEB Posted July 14, 2020 Staff Share Posted July 14, 2020 Hi JAL, Welcome to Affinity Forums Although we don't support native AI files you may still be able to export to directly to PDF from Rhino using a PDF printer driver. Have you tried that route? Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
JAL
Hello MEB, thank you for your reply. I think i will get by with pdfs. As I work on many technical illustrations I am used to exchange formats that are dimensionally stable. Also DXFs or DWGs as exchange are helpful in my work as they are trustworthy when it comes to precise measurements. I will check on the PDF possibilities. It always takes some time to change habits... Keep up the good work!
