MikeW Posted July 1, 2020 Share Posted July 1, 2020 Likely because there is no letter è defined as an ordinal in the font itself. You would need to use the superscript option in the character panel. This will/may then show the character as being a bit scaled differently than the "me" characters. If so, you may need to remove the ordinal feature from the "me" characters and use the superscript option from the character panel for the "ème" string. garrettm30 Posted July 1, 2020 Share Posted July 1, 2020 As MikeW says, it is just a limit of what the font supports, and Serif has chosen to separate the activation of font-supported superscripts and "fake" superscripts. This can be confusing at first, but once you understand it, it helps you know what is happening every time, and you can use the fake superscripts if you want. Alternatively, if this is a project where you have the freedom to make editing decisions, you could get around it by simply using 2e instead of 2ième. I know the 2ième form is very common, but it is "technically" considered an error, so it is quite acceptable to simply use 2e if you choose to do so. Here is part of an entry in the Banque de dépannage linguistique on the subject: Quote Pour abréger les expressions ordinales, on fait suivre le chiffre arabe ou romain d’une, de deux ou de trois lettres minuscules surélevées qui correspondent aux lettres finales des adjectifs. L’abréviation de deuxième et des adjectifs numéraux suivants (troisième, quatrième, etc.) se construit avec un e minuscule après le nombre correspondant; au pluriel, on ajoute un s. Exemples : - Les célébrations du 400e anniversaire de la ville de Québec ont été un franc succès. - Ce magasin se trouve à l’intersection de la 10e Rue et de la 4e Avenue. - Tous deux sont arrivés 10es au classement. […] Lorsqu’il n’est pas possible de surélever les lettres, il est admis de les écrire sur la ligne (1er, 2e, 3e, etc.).
