Recommended Posts

Not yet - There's been plenty of requests for printable slug area, but no official acknowledgement wether it will be implemented - we just have to try and keep faith?!?!?!?!

As a 30+ year prepress participant, the fold marks usually lie within the bleed area (as content outside of the bleed area does not print). The bleed area will be trimmed off - usually after folding has been accomplished. The fold marks should Not lie within the "Live" area that is the final product. The "Margin" area is within the "Live" printing area. Many shops have many different processes and procedures, but, this has been a typical practice for years. Further, the marks do not need to be especially large (less than .125 or 1/8 inch in the U.S.). The marks are typically printed in a "rich black" that is a combination of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) and any spot color, so that the marks can also be used to check process color registration.

Affinity Publisher 2 has the feature to include marks and/or bleed area in the Export/PDF dialog, although, you'll need to scroll down. I'll attach a screen shot. The fold marks would need to be accurately composed with a line or box stroke. I'd suggest using coordinate placement on the master page.

The PDF can then be printed with or without the bleed area (and consequently, the composed marks).

Best wishes, Barb.

I think you're missing the point, barbBear.  We know how to add crop marks. As it is, Publisher cannot output artwork items (such as fold marks) that are placed outside the bleed area.

When the bleed area is increased to allow for items that extend off the trimmed artwork, then the crop marks get moved to remain outside that extended bleed area. That is why a printable slug area is VITAL.

See my attached example book cover for why this is an issue.
